After the black two-year period 2020-2021, dominated by the aftermath of the pandemic, and the recovery in 2022 of about half of the losses incurred, 2023 records a further important growth in international tourist flows globally (+33.4% over 2022), which allows a remarkable approach to 2019 levels (-11.2%). In this context, the European South-Mediterranean area is characterized by a good cyclical performance (+16.3% over 2022) and exceeding the levels of international arrivals prior to the advent of Covid-19 (+1.6% over 2019). In this context, Tuscany’s performance stands out positively: in 2023 foreign arrivals increase by 17.6 percent cyclically over 2022, and rise to +3.5 percent over 2019.
In general terms, 2023 represents for Tuscany, in line with the country, the year of full recovery of pre-pandemic levels of tourist presences (-0.03% over 2019). Overall overnight stays increase by 8.8% over 2022, breaking through the ceiling of 52 million presences. This result is due exclusively to the dynamics of the foreign component (as mentioned +17.6%), while the domestic market stagnates (-0.3%). (…)

The data used for the preparation of this Economic Report on Tourism, both for the part relating to movement (arrivals and presences) and for that pertaining to the size of accommodation facilities and properties for short rentals, are collected by the Provincial Capital Municipalities and the Metropolitan City and are made available through the Regional Tourism Observatory for administrative purposes of analysis, in compliance with Regional Council Resolution No. 1558 of 2023.
